New Brunswick-Based Elijah’s Promise to Serve Free Meals via Food Truck

May 6, 2021 – Look out Door Dash!  Check your review mirrors Uber Eats!  A game changer is on the road in Central New Jersey – and the winners are families in need getting free, nutritious meals.

Elijah’s Promise is thrilled to start using its new food truck to bring meals to needy families in their own neighborhoods.  From a generous grant by The Benedict Silverman Foundation with additional support for the initiative from The Fonseca Family and Matty’s Gift, the New Brunswick-based non-profit was able to purchase “Elijah’s Promise on Wheels” earlier this year.  Now with staff behind the wheel and fuel in the tank, lunches are planned to be served at the following locations, weather permitting, with additional locations being added next month:

Sharon Baptist Church

25 Howard Street, New Brunswick

Saturdays, 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Aldersgate United Methodist Church

568 Ryders Lane, East Brunswick

Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

“Our mutual opportunities to grow and serve the greater New Brunswick community seem to be divinely orchestrated,” Reverend Conway C. Johnson, Jr., Pastor of the Sharon Baptist Church, said.  “As the fiscal impact of the pandemic on the community necessitated the Sharon pantry to expand operations from once a month to once a week, and Elijah’s Promise Community Kitchen to provide meals for tens of thousands of families and individuals, the food truck comes as a tremendous blessing to neighborhoods in the city which are challenged geographically to access a meal and other essential services.”

In three decades of work, Elijah’s Promise has never seen such tremendous need for its help. Its Soup Kitchen anticipates serving over 300,000 meals in 2021, more than double the meals served pre-pandemic. Staff expects this increased need for emergency food assistance to continue through the next few years.

“Elijah’s Promise has had a thirty year commitment to working with the most needy and underserved members of our community,” Elijah’s Promise Board President Gabriel Lavigne said.  “One of the biggest hurdles to that mission is often the inability to meet people where they are.  As a grassroots organization, we don’t like the word “can’t” and thus Elijah’s Promise on Wheels was born.  What better way to serve the community than to get out on the streets, be present in neighborhoods and helping people where they are.”
